Hetze tegen Breaking the Silence escaleert

De hetze in Israël tegen Breaking the Silence heeft een nieuw dieptepunt bereikt. De Israëlische minister van defensie Ya’alon heeft een onderzoek naar de organisatie van oud-soldaten gelast en Breaking the Silence van verraad beschuldigd.

Ya’alon gaf opdracht tot het onderzoek na een uitzending van de populistische tv-zender Channel 2. Die had videopnames vertoond die de extremistische organisatie Ad Kan stiekem van gemanipuleerde gesprekken met medewerkers van Breaking the Silence had gemaakt. Daaruit zou blijken dat Breaking the Silence geheime informatie aan soldaten ontfutseld.

Na de uitzending tuimelden politici en partijen over elkaar heen om Breaking the Silence te veroordelen. Alleen de progressieve Meretz-partij nam het voor Breaking the Silence op.

Yuli Novak, de directeur van Breaking the Silence, wees de beschuldigingen van de hand. Alle informatie die Breaking the Silence publiceert is door de militaire censor goedgekeurd, benadrukte Novak:

“There are certified bodies in the country that deal with authorizing data for publication. Our job is to collect information and publish it in accordance with the censor’s dictates.”

Novak zei tevens:

The information we publish doesn’t touch on issues of state security – but rather information meant to bring an end to the occupation – that’s our goal. Those who seek to continue to perpetuate the occupation don’t want this information to reach the Israeli public, but we will continue to expose the harsh realities of military rule in the occupied territories.

Commentator Haggai Matar wees op de hoge professionaliteit en betrouwbaarheid van Breaking the Silence:

This is a professional organization comprised of former soldiers, to which over one thousand soldiers have provided testimonies. Furthermore it is an organization that prides itself on its process of meticulously scrutinizing and filtering testimonies and testifiers. It only publishes things it has confirmed are true and that have passed through the IDF Censor. To this day, to the best of my knowledge, not one fabrication has been discovered from among the testimonies published by the organization.

Volgens de liberale Israëlische krant Haaretz is het doel van de hetze een verbod van Breaking the Silence:

“The purpose of this incitement, which began before the broadcast of the “findings” against Breaking the Silence, is to make the organization illegal and make opposing the occupation illegitimate.”

Ad Kan, de organisatie achter de uitzending van Channel 2, heeft de afgelopen jaren infiltranten in Breaking the Silence en andere Israëlische mensenrechten- en vredesorganisaties geplaatst. Ad Kan steunt de bezetting van Palestina en wil de Israëlische regering ertoe bewegen organisaties te breken die de bezetting bekritiseren.
